The Nassau County Police are hiring new recruits for the first time since 2008, and will be swearing in 37 new cadets on Friday in Mineola. The new cadets will spend the next seven months preparing for duty on the force by receiving physical and legal training at the Massapequa academy. First Deputy Police Commissioner Tom Krumpter stated, “I am very excited about hiring police officers. We haven’t hired a police officer in Nassau County since September 2008 … New blood is going to be welcomed.”
Would-be police officers interested in joining the force are advised to start sending in those resumes now, because this class may be the first of three or four that will be hired over the course of the next year, adding as many as 200 new officers to the force. Background investigations can take half a year, so it’s best to get started applying straight away. Around 45% of the candidates who get called in for an interview fail the agility test, so be ready to perform physically. Starting pay is only $34,000 a year, but after about a decade of service, that can increase to more than $100,000 a year, not to mention a pension and other benefits.
