The quest to capture the hearts and minds of Long Island children is a challenge in many of the school districts. School officials from across Long Island attended at discussion forum which was hosted by Senator Jack Martins and Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel. The topic of the discussion was a challenge sent to the education commissioner regarding student achievements.
This forum took place at the Great Neck Middle School. Dr. Dolan, the Great Neck School Superintendent, presented a data sheet entitled, “What if Long Island was the 51st State?” The premise of the sheet outlined the fact that if Long Island were its own state, it would rank among the highest in the nation in student achievement. This is the catalyst of the discussion about the state's involvement in rating the teachers and their evaluations.
As a way of doing this each of the superintendents communicated the message to the commissioner that each district is unique. At the same time Long Island is unique in terms of how school districts educate their students. Therefore, an approach that paints all school across New York State with the same brush may not necessarily work for Long Island schools. In essence, what is really needed for the students of Long Island is for the teachers, and the disctricts, to continue with their own supervision and evaluation.
