Maybe it is the Christmas season. Maybe it is simply the good hearted people of Long Island and the surrounding communities. Whatever, it is the people of Long Island, and the East Coast, are enjoying quite a bit of charity in the form of food, clothing, shelter, workers, and even tax breaks. Yes... tax breaks.
As a way to help not only boost the economy in the Sandy ravaged county, but also to help businesses get back on their feet, Nassau County has awarded $500,000 in sales tax breaks to 25 businesses damaged by the Super Storm.
Benefits are received when a company purchases new equipment or building materials to reopen after the Oct. 29 storm. The sales-tax exemption is part of the Local Enterprise Assistance and Development Service, or LEADS, for small businesses.
This is a tremendous break for the small business on the island and can directly contribute to many of the closed businesses to be able to reopened shortly. During the holiday season this is of particular importance as it is the time when many businesses make a large percentage of their sales for the year.
Of course, the is also the spring/summer season to get ready for. Without this tax break there may be those that would never have the opportunity to get back into operation.
