Glen Head, NY - June 12, 2014 - Assemblyman Michael Montesano (R,I,C-Glen Head) today announced that the Bethpage Public Library and Hicksville Public Library will be receiving Public Library Construction Grants. The Bethpage Public Library will receive $91,564 for a variety of major repairs including the art gallery, auditorium, media room and replacement of falling lighting. The Hicksville Public Library will receive $4,372 for installation of interior and exterior camera surveillance to increase the safety and security of the building.
“Our libraries are a valuable asset to our communities, making vital information accessible to the public. They also serve as a great benefit to individuals of all ages by offering many diverse programs that provide opportunities to learn and grow,” said Montesano. “I can’t stress enough the importance of these construction grants, as they are necessary in assisting in crucial infrastructure repairs our libraries so greatly need in order to continue remain a place where the community can come together.”
New York’s public libraries are in urgent need of renovation and upgrading. A recent survey showed a documented need for public library construction and renovation projects totaling more than $2.2 billion. More than 48 percent of the over 1,000 public library buildings in communities across New York are over 60 years old. Another 30 percent are more than three decades old. Many of New York’s local public libraries are unable to accommodate users with disabilities; are energy inefficient; cannot provide Internet, computer and other electronic technologies to users because of outdated and inadequate electrical wiring; and do not have sufficient space to house the libraries’ expanding collections, address the need for adequate meeting rooms, or provide for public access computers.
The Public Library Construction Grant Program is a $14 million capital-fund appropriation in the 2013 state budget for the construction and renovation of public libraries and library systems across New York State to address these issues.
