Garden City, NY - May 7th, 2015 - Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C. has awarded scholarships to three Long Island veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan and are now enrolled at Nassau Community College. The scholarship program, which was initiated by the firm in 2011, recognizes local veterans who are continuing their education after returning from military service.
The Meyer Suozzi scholarship committee was chaired by partner A. Thomas Levin, Chair of the Local Government, Land Use and Environmental Compliance practice and the Professional Responsibility practice, and Past President of the NY State Bar Association.
The scholarship awards ceremony will be held on May 13th at Nassau Community College.
“Over the past five years, our firm has had the honor of awarding scholarships to more than two dozen veterans,” said Meyer Suozzi Managing Attorney, Lois Carter Schlissel. “We deeply appreciate their service and wish them great success in their future endeavors.”
About the Scholarship Recipients:
Natasha Gibson of Valley Stream, a veteran of the Army National Guard, aspires to be a registered nurse - a passion which stemmed from her experiences taking care of a terminally ill family member. She believes there is no greater pleasure than lifting the spirits of the sick and restoring hope in others. To achieve her goal, Ms. Gibson plans to pursue a bachelors of science in Nursing.
Agustin Cabrera of Massapequa was deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom with the United States Army. After his active service, Mr. Cabrera found that artistic therapy including film, production and performance, was a therapeutic way of dealing with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the very real struggle of reentering civilian life. He is currently a Media major at Nassau Community College and plans to share his positive experiences with performing arts as therapy with other veterans who suffer from PTSD and other war-stress related symptoms.
Harrington Newman served in the United States Army. He is currently completing his Computer Repair Technology degree and plans to receive a bachelors in Computer Science. Driven by his past experiences in the aviation field and extensive background with both analog and digital circuits as well as chassis assembly, after finishing school, he plans to seek a Network and Computer Systems Administrator position.
