The juried, Maritime-themed art show, will be up for public viewing during the Opening Reception on October 18, as well as on Saturdays and Sundays from October 20 through October 28, from 11 AM to 4 PM. The Opening Reception is a free event open to the public, where guests will have the opportunity to meet the artists; refreshments will be served. The jurors of this show are arts advocate Vivian Sheehan and artist Alan Bull. Of 93 entries, 28 were selected for inclusion in the show, with one ‘Best in Show’ prize awarded to Michael Withers for his color reduction print entitled Catch of the Day.
After the Opening Reception of the Maritime-inspired Art Show, sea shanty singer Frank Hendricks will present a fascinating discussion entitled “Songs of the Sea: The Lesser Known World of Shanties and Fo’c’sle Songs” which is part of East End Arts’ Third Thursdays arts talk series. Nineteenth century sailors used songs for both work and recreation; shanties were the work songs of the tall ships. About them author Herman Melville said, "I soon got used to this singing: for the sailors never touched a rope without it." Frank Hendricks, a member of Stout and the New York Packet, has been singing sea shanties at South Street Seaport since the 1970s, and at this event he will perform shanties, discuss their uses aboard ship, and share what 19th century maritime authors Herman Melville, Richard Henry Dana, and Francis Law Olmstead had to say about them. This program also includes "fo'c'sle songs" which sailors sang to entertain one another during their off-watch hours. East End Arts’ Third Thursday program at Brecknock Hall is funded by the Long Island Community Foundation.
The Maritime Heritage of the North Fork Festival is a collaborative of North Fork organizations hosting events and programs of this theme, coordinated by East End Arts, Peconic Landing, East End Seaport Museum, and Brecknock Hall Foundation, as part of the Arts Alive Long Island, a month long festival debuting this October – National Arts and Humanities Month – showcasing Long Island’s world-class arts and culture, the arts across Long Island, is presented by the Long Island Arts Alliance and sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union with additional support from the Long Island Community Foundation, media partner WNET/WLIW and transportation partner, the Long Island Railroad.
