Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano has just announced that the county will be sponsoring a Foster and Adoptive Recruitment Forum at the Long Island Children’s Museum on Thursday, April 17th. The event will begin at 7:00 p.m., and will be open to prospective foster and adoptive parents who are considering inviting a child into their home, and will provide a chance to get answers to questions and get a better understanding for what the responsibility of adoption or fostering entails.
At the panel, foster and adoptive parents will give presentations, and so will young adults who were adopted or part of the foster care system. The Nassau County Department of Social Services (DSS) makes extensive efforts to recruit foster families throughout the area. “It is imperative that we certify a diverse group of foster families to accommodate the cultural diversities of the children who enter foster care in our communities,” stated Maria Lauria, Director of Children’s Services at DSS. Currently there are around 240 children in foster care in Nassau County. Foster homes in Nassau County must receive certification through DSS. Parents may be single, married, separated, divorced, or living with a partner, and must be 21 or older in order to participate.
