The new school season for 2012-2013 has just gotten underway and already there are more than just new children, and new faces in the halls of Long Island schools. Seeking a new superintedant for the Lynbrook school system, the Lynbrook Board of Education held a special meeting for address this need. In this special meeting members of the board voted unanimously to appoint Assistant Superintendant of Business Melissa Burak as the interim superintendant. Burak will be replacing Dr. Santo J. Barbarino, who died on Aug. 27.
Dr. Barbarino was a beloved superintendant who had a great vision for the school disctrict and for the children. He had previously talked about retiring after this school year. The search for a new superintendant was in the beginning phases until Dr. Barbarino's untimely death made it a priority.
The Board of Education is still pursuing its search and wants the community to know that this is not just the decision of the board and its members. Board president Catherine Papandrew said in a statement, "Please know that it is our intention to have the community involved in this search process."
Over the next few weeks the board is also taking in recommendations for the ovbservance of a memorial to honor the work of Dr. Barbarino. They will also be conducting a wide search for a long term superintendant with the same vision for the children of Lynbrook, and heart, as his predecessor.
