27 year old Mizzie Artis recently made headlines in Long Island when she was busted by police with almost 100 pounds of marijuana in her vehicle. What many people are finding amusing about the headline is why she was caught. The only reason that she got pulled over and charged with first degree possession of marijuana was that she was committing multiple traffic violations, all of them easily avoidable.
Nassau County police officials noticed that Artis was talking on her cell phone while she was driving, and also that she was not wearing a seat belt. The police followed her for some distance before pulling her over. Before they did, she had committed a number of other traffic violations, including running a stop sign and forgetting to signal when she made a turn. She also conducted her drug trade business openly onArmand Streetwhere she met with a man who was driving a minivan. Her car had two large boxes in it and smelled distinctly like marijuana, which led to her arrest after police pulled her over.
Artis may have been a drug runner, but she was not a particularly intelligent one. Driving without a seatbelt, talking on her cell phone on the road, doing her business in the open, running a stop sign and forgetting to signal are all pretty obvious mistakes. Alas, as any New Yorker knows, this kind of bad driving is typical of Long Island roads.
