Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has just announced that Long Island has emerged as a winner in his annual state business aid contest for the second time in three years. Long Island will receive $83 million in business aid money. This is the largest award that will be given this year. The award winners were selected by a panel of state agency commissioners. Various building projects and workforce expansion plans were weighed for probable success and rated on a 100 point scale. The plans were presented by councils represented by businesspersons, educational representatives, and non-profit organizations. The governor created these councils in order to provide direction and consolidation for regional business projects. The Long Island council has twenty-two members, and is led jointly by co-vice chairmen Kevin Law, president of the Long Island Association business group, and Stuart Rabinowitz, Hofstra University president.
In 2011, Long Island won $101.6 million in the contest. With this year’s funds, business projects in Suffolk and Nassau will be able to move forward, resulting in the creation of hundreds of new jobs for members of the Long Island community. This in turn will bolster the economy by empowering jobless workers to get a new start.
