Long Island wines were big winners at this year's New York Wine and Food Classic. In this year's rendition of the New York classic event of food, wine, and gourmet decadence, Long Island wineries took home 6 of the 30 different prizes up for grabs. This is a great achievement for the hard working vineyard owners, and their employees, in bringing quality wines from Long Island into the limelight.
The winners of the event included a 2011 Festival Chardonnay from Paumanok Vineyards. In fact, this $16.99 wine won two different times as state’s best overall and best unoaked chardonnay. The 2010 Estate Reserve from Martha Clara Vineyards, a $21.99 wine won the best overall in the oaked chardonnay category. Bedell Cellars' had a big night themselves as two of their offerings, their 2008 merlot and the 2010 malbec, each won their respective divisions. The 2009 pinot noir from Osprey's Dominion Vineyard was also a winner at this year's food and wine festival.
This festival is held each year on Aug. 13 and 14 in Watkins Glen, in the Finger Lakes region. The New York Wine and Grape Foundation, a trade association, is the hosting party and they put a lot of effort into creating an amazing atmosphere of not only great food, wine, and entertainment, but a dignifying event to showcase New York's best.
Because of the honor of winning an award at this prestigious event, nineteen of Long Island’s more than 50 producers and, over all, 104 of New York’s 321 participated. Long Island wineries sent 135 of the 752 entries. The wine contest is set up so that only the gold and double-gold winners can move onto the finals.
For the Long Island wines that made it into the finals they were Bedell’s 2010 chardonnay ($25), Paumanok’s 2011 dry riesling ($22) and the 2006 blanc de blancs sparkling wine from Sparkling Pointe.
In all, the 2012 New York Wine and Food Classic was a great success for both the people who attended and Long Island wineries.
