Every year, the Long Island Suffolk and Nassau County law enforcement officers get together to have a massive tug-of-war. The 5th Annual Island Police Tug-Of-War Championship is not for bragging rights about which side has the stronger police force, but more to honor and benefit the veterans of the force and their families.
There are different teams which are comprised of groups from the police departments, deputy sheriffs and correctional officers for both Nassau County and Suffolk County. The teams are weighed before the event takes place to make sure that each of the teams are properly balanced.
Even though the event is more about the benefit given to those in need, there is still the issue of bragging rights on the line. Members of law enforcement form both sides as well as members of the communities feel it is their right to rib the other side about losing in the tug-of-war. This is why the competition is expected to be just as fierce as usual between these two sides.
Whether you have a stake in the bragging rights that will ensue, you are welcome to show up and cheer the sides on. You will not only be witnessing the challenge set forth by the Nassau County police, correction officers and deputy sheriffs. They won the title last year and are determined to win it again this year.
The event will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, July 27. It will be held at the Jones Beach State Park on field four by the band shell. All are invited to show up and watch the event and even to enjoy the music of the AC/DC tribute band “Live Wire” appearing live in the Friendly’s Bandshell. Even though the event is free, you may want to consider bringing your wallet so you can give to a worthwhile fund raiser.
