Kate Nalepinski, 17, claims that she was fired over a non-contagious skin disease by her boss at the Tutti Frutti Yogurt shop in Port Jefferson Station. According to Nalepinski, she worked only one day at the Tutti Frutti before being fired, apparently over her eczema. After working her full shit, the manager called her into the back office. Nalepinski told CBS News, “She asked me what was on my skin. I explained I was clean, it was not contagious, and a season disease. She told me I couldn’t work there.”
Nalepinski suggested that she wear a long-sleeved shirt to work to cover the eczema patches on her arms. The manager fired her anyway, citing a slow season as the official reason for letting her go. Nonetheless, Nalepinski has filed a petition on Change.org, stating that the manager’s actions are clearly discriminatory. “I explained my disease in-depth: seasonal, non-contagious, and sterile, thus it couldn’t impact any working conditions,” she explained on the website. “The manager encouraged me to return in the summer – when my skin is clear … No form of discrimination is acceptable. My objective is to spread awareness through this petition, and as a result, expose the discriminatory business that is Tutti Frutti.”
