Mount Sinai, NY, November 10, 2012 – Privacy concerns are a growing trend among social networks users as an increasing number of job recruiters and universities are using social profile information as a means to hire or accept a candidate. Desocialize Me has introduced new services to help a user protect their social profile information while improving their social profile to represent the user as one who is both professional and respectable.
Negative, offensive, or inappropriate content posted on a social network profile can have severe consequences for many young adults. The Wall Street Journal reported on a recent survey conducted by the Kaplan Test Prep company which found that nearly 25% of top American colleges have used an applicant’s social profile as a way to screen, evaluate, and learn more about the applicant. The same trend is true for recent college graduates as employers are using social network information to decide whether to hire or interview an applicant.
Jeff Olson, vice president of data science at Kaplan Test Prep, has recently expressed his concerns regarding Kaplan’s findings and the impact that an applicant’s social profile can have on his or her chances for admission or employment:
“The trend line is there, my advice to students is to be smart and think twice about what you post online."
After noticing the trend first hand, recent college graduate and founder of Desocialize Me, Evan Tousey, began to mobilize resources in an effort to assist those who are the most likely to be affected by the trend. Mr. Tousey set out to work with job recruiters and professionals from both the public and private sectors, as well as with senior administration from top American universities, to identify the most influential factors about a social profile that can effect or sway a decision about an applicant one way or another.
The result of consulting with recruiters, professionals, and senior administrators, is a set of criteria which Desocialize Me uses to evaluate a profile that aims to support a client’s employment or admission candidacy during their application process. Each profile is analyzed against the criteria to determine the strengths and weaknesses of a client‘s profile. Once the strengths and weaknesses are identified, remediation services, such as removing offensive and inappropriate content are rendered, so recruiters and admissions staff can view the client as one who is well qualified, professional, and deserving of admission or employment.
As Desocialize Me begins to introduce its new services, the company is looking to collaborate with student-parent organizations at the high school level, as well as with university student groups, to educate students on the dangers and the consequences about the content they post on their social network profile and the potential negative effects it can have for them in their future.
