The funeral for a Navy SEAL from Long Island who was killed last week was held today with great fanfare and honor. Special Warfare Operator Third Class Jonathan H. Kaloust, 23, was remembered as a “born leader” who inspired others. He died in Fort Knox when the Humvee he was riding in overturned.
People lined both sides of the street along both sides of Park Boulevard in Massapequa Park to honor the solder and support his family. Soldiers from the U.S. Navy made a path outside the Massapequa Funeral Home for the coffin to pass through.
Al Bevilacqua, Kaloust’s former high school wrestling coach, said, “Jon was a born leader, he was always someone others wanted to be like. Jon’s just one of the exceptional kids, and I think the turnout you see from the community is an indication.”
Although many of the people who lined the streets did not know him personally, they came out to show him honor and respect, and to thank him for giving the ultimate sacrifice-his life. "I put myself in his family's position and felt very bad for them. We have a very tight community here," said Kathleen O'Connor. "Honor him as he should be."
Kaloust grew up in Massapequa and joined the Navy in March 2011. He was buried in Long Island National Cemetery and is survived by his parents and a sister.
