If you’re located anywhere along the Long Island or New Jersey shore tonight, you should get ready for a serious Nor’easter which is coming in, bringing flooding and strong winds in its wake. The damage left by Hurricane Sandy is a stark reminder of the pain and loss which flooding can bring, but a good prompt to take precautions against future damage. The Long Island Power Authority has already taken steps to move its equipment away from possible strong winds, making it less likely that there will be a power outage as a result of the storm.
Local governments on Long Island are not interested in being caught off guard again with the roads. More than 140 trucks and 4,000 private snow plow contractors are ready on stand-by to set out the moment that snow touches the ground. Hopefully Long Islanders won’t be facing the danger and inconvenience of snow-clogged highways again, but there are no guarantees against the forces of nature. If you’re planning on driving anywhere overnight or tomorrow morning, you may want to check on the road conditions and the weather forecast and think twice before setting out. It’s not worth it to get caught in a blizzard.
