On Tuesday night, Long Island residents debated whether or not a company called Liberty Natural should build a natural gas port 17 miles off the Jones Beach coast called “Port Ambrose.” According to Liberty Natural, the new natural gas port would lower energy prices and bring jobs to the local community. But it could also have a negative impact. Residents of Long Island and New Jersey are concerned that tanker accidents and gas explosions could endanger lives and the environment.
Larry Moriarty of the Surfrider Foundation points out, “I think they’re in over their heads. We all live here, know that one big wave can change our lives forever.” In 2010, the New Jersey Governor, Chris Christie, vetoed the original version of the Port Ambrose plan, but the company says it has redesigned the plan, which is now completely invisible from the shore. Nearly the entire operation would take place underwater. According to the company, the technology is safe. Businesspersons on LI are concerned however that it could shut down shipping lanes and have an adverse effect on business. The debate will continue tonight in Edison at the New Jersey Convention and ExpositionCenter.
