Democratic Long Island Representative Carolyn McCarthy has just been diagnosed with lung cancer. McCarthy has been in office for the past sixteen years. The cancer was discovered during an annual physical, and is apparently the treatable variety. She will be treated at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and is optimistic about the outcome even though she will be missing out on work during the treatment. “My doctor atM emorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where I’ll receive my treatment, has told me that I begin my treatment in good physical health and that he looks forward to my return to work when I recover,” McCarthy posted in a statement online.
At age 69, cancer is far from the first challenge that McCarthy has faced in her life. McCarthy is best known as a gun control advocate who took up the cause after her husband Dennis was killed by a gunman on a Long Island Rail Road commuter train. Her son Kevin was also injured by the shooter. “I look forward to a successful treatment and returning to continue the mission,” appended McCarthy, who is determined to return to work and campaign for her cause again as soon as she is able.
