Representative Pete King of Long Island just became the first GOP member to announce that he will be running for President of the United States in 2016. King made the announcement on a New Hampshire radio station while talking to radio host Granite Staters, saying that listeners could expect to see and hear more of him since “right now I’m running for President.”
Pete King is not a very well known politician, and probably will not be the most well known GOP candidate. He has stated in the past that he thinks that likely candidates Rand Paul and Ted Cruz have isolationist points of view, and are likely to drive away voters. King has not said much more about his possible platform, and this is the first time he has delivered a direct statement concerning the race at all. While he is not very well known right now, in a few years, that could change, considering the assortment of GOP candidates who ran in the 2012 presidential election. Many commenters have expressed surprise on news websites online, saying that he has no shot at nomination, but these commenters appear to be forgetting last year’s candidates. Only time will tell how far Pete King will get in the race for the highest office in the land.
