Long Island agencies have just been awarded $10.6 million in federal grants from the Department of Housing and Urban Development. These grants include around $350,00 for brand new programs. The rest will be put toward existing programs that provide housing and services to the homeless.
The new programs include two more permanent housing programs for the homeless, one of which is geared toward veterans, and another program which will involve the development of a centralized assessment program for the distribution of homeless services in Nassau and Suffolk counties. LI agencies applied for funding for four other new programs which would provide permanent housing to chronically homeless Long Islanders, but did not receive the grant money necessary to open up the new programs. Greta Guarton, executive director for the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless, is quick to point out that there is never enough support for the homeless on LI. “For every unit we’re able to develop, there’s probably five or six eligible families that just can’t find a place.” The funding provided this year will probably only cover the programs for the next year, after which new funding will have to be procured to continue with development.
