A physician on Long Island was recently arrested for drug related charges. This news, out of Central Islip, concerns Carmine Mandarano. On Thursday, he surrendered to drug enforcement officials, and currently he awaits an appearance in court to answer for his alleged crimes. According to authorities, Mandarano, age 61, illegally prescribed thousands of painkillers to Long Islanders. Between 2010 and 2012 alone, he prescribed over 300,000 oxycodone pills. All or most of these pills were likely illegal according to court documentation, considering that Mandarano specialized in areas which should not involve large amounts of these drugs. Mandarano’s specialties included asthma, immunology, and allergies. He also worked with patients on smoking cessation. His office is located in East Islip.
Mandarano’s arrest is just one in a number of recent arrests relating to the illegal prescription of painkillers. Authorities have made no further comment on the case or how it was brought to their attention. Patients of Mandarano dispute the charges, stating that Mandarano treats many patients with chronic pain, and that the allegations must be false. The crackdown on illegal pain medication distribution will continue on Long Island as patients wait to find out whether Mandarano will be cleared or convicted on the charges.
