New Memoir by Octogenarian Long Island Resident Dom “The Mushroom Man” Recounts Life-long Passion for Wild Edibles
(December 10, 2012) — Flint Mine Press announces the release of Mushrooming?on?Long?Island – Selected Memoirs of an Obsessed Mycophile by Dom Laudato, based on the author’s personal observations and experiences as an amateur mycologist, past-president of the Long Island Mycological Club, and consultant for the Long Island Poison Control Center.Readers can experience amateur mycology first-hand through the eyes of a life-long, knowledgeable (and admittedly, often obsessed) mycophile.
Dom, “the Mushroom Man,” was born in 1930s Brooklyn into a busy Italian family, at a time when foraging for food was a necessity for survival. He has spent the last half century foraging, identifying and recording his mushroom finds – from the more common to the most unsuspected specimens – while living on Long Island where his boyhood curiousity with nature and mushrooms became a life-long obsession.
In Mushrooming?on?Long?Island, Dom covers topics such as the pursuit and identification of the wild mushroom; the early origins of the Long Island Mycological Club; the colorful personalities of Long Island’s local mushroom scene; and shares his personal month-by-month mushroom finds which number over 1,000 listings – all the while engaging the reader with folksy, biographical commentary and anecdotes.
“Dom’s account of his personal journey into the arcane field of mycology can only encourage and inspire fledgling mycophiles,” noted Charles J. Hrbek, former president of the Boston Mycological Club. “His enthusiasm is genuine, and contagious.”
Highlights include Dom’s own descriptions of the easy-to-find “foolproof seven” edible mushrooms, favorite recipes, personal photographs, notes and illustrations. Complete with a color photo insert, glossary and index, Mushrooming?on?Long?Island will appeal not only to those interested in the pursuit of the wild mushroom, but to anyone who is passionate about nature.
Mushrooming?on?Long?Island – Selected Memoirs of an Obsessed Mycophile can be ordered from the publisher at www.FlintMinePress.com. It is available on Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble and other major booksellers, local book shops, and online booksellers. The eBook version will be available in January 2013.
