Wednesday morning, a nursing home in Rockville was evacuated following a burst pipe. The frozen pipe ruptured and spilled water down through the roof around 4 in the morning. Concerned that the heavy snow and ice weighing down the roof might cause it to collapse, staff members at the Maple Pointe Assisted Living Facility evacuated the facility for repairs. Following the evacuation, emergency workers arrived at the scene and discovered the lobby had accumulated a foot of water. The ruptured pipe turned out to be part of the sprinkler system.
The water damaged the interior of the nursing home, in particular the electrical system. The elevators are no longer working safely, and have been shut down. The heat had to be turned off as well, and some of the rooms are flooded just like the lobby. Nobody was injured, however the nursing home serves as a residence for over 130 occupants. Residents will be able to return to the nursing home in two days. Until then, they will have to find accommodation elsewhere. Many will stay with their friends and family; others will have to stay at hotels and senior centers. Once the building is declared safe again, they will be able to move back in.
