Stefan Serie, a health teacher at Merrick Avenue Middle School, was coerced into resigning from his job after appearing on the Bravo reality show Princesses: Long Island. Serie’s only crime was to show off his sculpted abs in the background of the show while the main characters drink in the foreground. The episode aired on June 2nd, and about a week later, administrators at the school sent a letter telling him that his tenure had been rescinded. The letter urged him to resign from his job.
While Serie received high ratings for his work at the school, he ended up quitting his $75,000 a year post at the middle school. Even though he has resigned, Serie is still fighting the decision. “I want my job and tenure back. I think I deserve it.” Parents have been backing up Serie, who was popular with his students and well respected in the community. “I was an ancillary character in the background,” he added. “The behavior of the cast members was not something I wanted to be a part of moving forward … I’m devastated. This is the most difficult experience of my life.” Moreover, this is hardly the first time Serie has appeared shirtless in public. As a triathlon, he has run shirtless in many competitions, photos of which appear online. There was nothing illegal or inappropriate in Serie's behavior. If he is not reinstated, he plans to pursue legal action.
