The 2013 Long Island Marathon started and finished without incident, and the results are now in. Derek Rammelkamp, 23, was announced as the winner for the men’s marathon, and Kelly Gillen, 20, was announced as the winner of the women’s race. Rammelkamp’s time was 2:32:10, and Gillen’s time was 3:03:04.
The Long Island Marathon is a major event with thousands of runners; this year competitors from 30 states arrived to run in the race. There were a lot of concerns about security following the tragic bombing incident at the Boston Marathon last month, but officials were on high alert during the Long Island Marathon, implementing extra security measures like bomb-sniffing dogs and officers in helicopters and on motorcycle and horseback. Runners were unable to bring backpacks, and had to keep their supplies in clear plastic bags.
The race opened up with a moment of silence to honor the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings, and many of the runners and members of the crowd sported shirts supporting the victims. Some of the participants in the race had participated in the Boston Marathon as well. Those who were concerned that runners and audience members might withdraw from the race need not have worried; if anything, the terrible events in Boston became an impetus for members of the regional community to show up and voice their support for the fallen.
