Kenneth Klapak, a Long Island resident who grew up in North Babylon, suffered an accident in the workplace which cost him both of his hands. The sheet metal worker says he can’t remember the details of the accident, only that he became caught and within a second, the machine had cut off his hands. His severed hands were salvaged however, and he was treated quickly enough that Long Island doctors were able to successfully reattach both of his hands—not a common accomplishment in cases like this. “Too see that my hands are attached. I hit lotto, I am a rich man,” said Klapak, expressing his gratitude. “I got the ‘big G’ on my side and an incredible team on my side.”
The surgery took place at Stony Brook University Hospital and took two teams of doctors eight hours to complete. The only reason that both hands could be saved was that the hospital fortunately employed several skilled hands surgeons, all of whom were able to work simultaneously to complete the task. Klapak’s recovery is expected to be long and difficult, but with determination and time, he may be able to recover full use of his hands again—a boon for a man who loves to play the guitar and makes his trade by working with his hands.
