If you work as a cashier on Long Island and you think you’ve had to put up with some crazy customers, just wait until you hear what happened to a cashier working at Carvel ice cream on Dutch Broadway. The 55 year old employee working at the counter received a coupon for one free ice cream cone, but the coupon was expired. When she tried to explain to William Hotz, age 59, that his coupon was no longer valid and that he would have to pay for his ice cream cone (which was marked at $3.50), he responded by walking out the door.
The woman followed him outside, because at that point, Hotz already had his ice cream. When she demanded it back, Hotz punched her in the face several times, resulting in a cut and swollen lip. When police arrived on the scene, Hotz resisted arrest, struggling against police as they sought to handcuff him. Authorities had to actually call for backup in order to restrain the man. Not only was he charged for robbery, but also for resisting arrest, and all over a $3.50 ice cream cone. Of course, hearing this story about a bruised and bloodied lip over a $3.50 ice cream cone, you might also be thinking that heroic store employee was just a little overcommitted given the circustmances.
