A former Home Depot handyman on Long Island was just convicted this Monday of plotting to set off a pipe bomb in the store and attempting to extort $2 million from his ex-employer. Daniel Sheehan, from the town of Deer Park, sent a letter to the manager of a Huntington Home Depot in October, claiming he had placed a bomb in the store. It is not clear from the sources available whether this was the store where Sheehan used to work. The letter was anonymous, so authorities were unable to immediately track down Sheehan, though they did find the pipe bomb and were able to safely detonate it. Later, Sheehan sent another threat to the store, saying he would set off three more bombs on Black Friday if he didn’t receive the $2 million he was demanding.
Sheehan’s attorney apparently attempted to make a case that the pipe bomb he planted was not dangerous, even though authorities were able to set it off. He has been charged and convicted by a federal judge with attempted extortion and the use of a destructive device, and will be serving 30 years in prison for his crimes.
