Local landlord Menachem Stark, 39, known to many in the area as a loan shark and a slumlord, was found dead in a trash bin in Nassau County on Friday, his charred body still burning from the waist down. Stark was a well known local businessman and a millionaire at the time of his death. The high-profile murder has already made international news.
Investigators say however that they have no idea where to start looking into his case, not because Stark was lacking in enemies, but because he had so many of them. Stark owed large debts, and also handed out questionable loans to members of the community. He had at least one sealed arrest in his past for molesting a teenager girl, and had plenty of angry tenants to boot. The hatred directed at Stark is so pervasive and shameless that ex-tenants and business associates have joked out loud since his death that they felt like killing him at times in the past. “I’ve had many conversations with him, and of course in many of those conversations I wanted to kill him,” ex-tenant Greg Hanlon kidded. Other tenants have joked that the murderer should be sentenced to live in one of Stark's buildings. So far, no progress has been made toward identifying the killer.
