An ad for Veria Living, a health and wellness TV station, has offended some commuters on the Long Island Rail Road to the point of complaining. The ad reads, “Ladies, admit it. You’re doing kegels right now.” Kegel exercises can be done anywhere without anyone noticing since they work out internal muscles. Numerous customers complained to the rail station and local news agencies. One woman, apparently missing the fact that men also do Kegel exercises, said, “There’s a lot of kids on the train, why would you put that up there? Do they ask guys if they have jock itch?”
The outcry against the ad is amusing in light of the fact that the popular pelvic floor muscle exercises have more than one application, and are in fact used by pregnant women to assist with delivery. So while a "naughty" read-in could be imagined, there are plenty of innocent ways to interpret the ad as well. “I think it’s hilarious. It’s really funny,” stated another passenger. “Why would it be offensive? There’s much more offensive things out there to be concerned with.” The Metropolitan Transportation Authority, responding to complaints, states they will not take down the ad.
