Hempstead firefighters and police in Nassaucounty received a call reporting that a local house was on fire around 2:30 in the afternoon on Wednesday, only to arrive to find that the house was utterly destroyed. Thankfully no one was killed in what investigators are now guessing was an explosion caused by a gas leak. Sadly, neighboring houses were damaged by the blast, and the house itself is now an unsalvageable wreck. Lending credence to the idea that a gas leak caused the explosion, some residents in the area reported that they heard a loud noise like an explosion around the time that the fire was reported.
A couple of neighbors were injured; one was hit by flying debris, while the other experienced shortness of breath, but no serious injuries have been reported. Gas leaks can be hard to detect because natural gas is odorless and colorless. Scents are added to the natural gas used in houses in order to make it easier to detect a gas leak. Residents who want to protect their homes against gas leaks may install gas detectors, which can sound an alarm should there be a dangerous level of gas detected in the air.
