Two groundhogs in the Tri-State area reported conflicting news about the upcoming winter weather. While the Staten Island groundhog did not see his shadow, Malverne Mel, the Long Island groundhog, did, as reported by Carol D’Auria And Sophia Hall, of 1010 WINS and WCBS 880 respectively. “Six more weeks of winter,” Patricia McDonald, Malverne’s mayor, reported after seeing Malverne Mel’s shadow. “Six more weeks of winter, sorry.”
Which groundhog is right? Well, according to weather services, there’s going to be a “light snow event” on Saturday night, continuing on into Superbowl Sunday as a result of a low-pressure system just offshore. Right now weather officials are predicting 3 inches of snow or less. So it looks like for the near future at least, Malverne Mel, theLong Islandgroundhog, is correct. And then there’s the fact it was only 19 degrees Fahrenheit in Staten Island when the other groundhog made its prediction. That’s a pretty chilly temperature for a claim that spring is on its way. But we’ll have to see what happens over the next six weeks before we can really know whether the Staten Island groundhog or the Long Island groundhog is the more accurate predictor!
