It was only a matter of time before the Long Island gas crunch was taken up by the Attorney General's office. In Long Island there have been four different gas stations that are targeted by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman's office. They have been notified on Thursday that they had violated the state price-gouging statute following gas shortages caused by superstorm Sandy.
Schneiderman's office has been investigating several different gas stations in the Long Island area as reports continue to pour in. With the formal notice to these four locations, they were told to expect enforcement very soon. However, it was not only gas stations on Long Island that were targeted. There were also nine of ther gas stations in New York City boroughs and Westchester who also received notices. This makes for a total of 13 operations. Which when you look at the hundreds of stations on Long Island alone, that is not a bad ratio.
The four gas stations on Long Island accused of price gouging are the Shell at 408 Rockaway Tpke. in Cedarhurst, the Express Mart at 1000 Rte. 109 in Lindenhurst, USA Petroleum in East Islip and USA Petroleum at 2664 Rte. 112 in Medford.
The investigation by the New York Attorney General's office got underway as the complaints came in that the stations were charging $4.99 to $5.50 per gallon without any signs for the prices. It was almost like they were making up the price as they went along. These complaints were a part of the more than 700 different complaints.
There is no question that price gouging is not a good practice as there are hundreds of people lined up at your pumps. And, now with the AG's office a part of the equation, we may see Long Island gas prices get back to normal price ranges.
