Long Island Game Farm Hosts Kawasaki Disease Fundraiser
Hosts Event to Raise Funds and Awareness of This Little-Known Childhood Disease
The Long Island Game Farm Wildlife Park and Children’s Zoo will host a fundraiser for the Kawasaki Disease Foundation on Saturday, July 13 from noon until 6 p.m. The Game Farm is located at 489 Chapman Boulevard in Manorville, New York.
Tickets are $15 per person, which is payable in advance. Proceeds will go to the Kawasaki Disease Foundation to help fund research for a cure. The park will be open for guests to see hundreds of animals, including an 18-foot giraffe, red kangaroos, kinkajous, cougars, Barbados sheep, peacocks, and the only lemurs born and bred on Long Island. From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., a special Kawasaki Survivors Celebration will take place in the park’s Woodland Gardens.
Kawasaki disease is a condition that causes inflammation in the walls of small- and medium-sized arteries throughout the body. The disease is largely seen in children under the age of 5 and can be potentially fatal if the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle, become inflamed. The cause for Kawasaki disease is still unknown as scientists struggle to find a trigger behind the disease.
“We encourage everyone to come out to the Game Farm and help support a worthwhile cause,” said Melinda Novak, Co-Owner of Long Island Game Farm, whose sister Susan passed away from multiple myeloma at the age of 37 in 2001. “Although little is known about this disease, it is a very serious disease which targets young children. The Game Farm is proud to support this effort to raise money in finding a cure.”
