Michael Cosgrove has been a volunteer firefighter on Long Island for fifteen years. In March, he responded to a call only to find when he arrived at the scene of the explosion, it was his own home which was burning to the ground. Cosgrove and his team rescued his seven and nine year old children from the burning home, but were unable to salvage the structure. “I have to explain to them that there’s nothing left,” Cosgrove stated on the day of the fire. The family moved into a trailer on the lawn, but were unable to do anything about rebuilding the home.
This Tuesday, Liberty Mutual awarded Cosgrove a national honor for valor for his heroic actions during a fire two years ago. Acting on his own initiative, he climbed up to rescue a man hanging out the window of a burning house nearby his own. He suffered severe burns as a result of his act. The man did not survive, but thanks to the volunteer firefighter's heroism, the Selden Fire Department now has $10,000 to use on improving fire hydrants. The award for his heroism was determined before his recent tragedy. Learning that Michael Cosgrove was chosen as the recipient for the award has been a very heartening moment in the lives of the Cosgrove family, a bright spot during challenging times.
