A number of service roads along the Long Island Expressway will be closed overnight for the next four weeks so that signs along the service roads can be replaced. The roads will be inaccessible to traffic from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., and are located in both Nassau and Suffolk. The New York State Department of Transportation has contracted Mana Construction Group, a Jericho-based company, to replace the signs with newer, more reflective signs. These will be more visible to traffic, especially after dark.
Work on the service roads began on Tuesday in Oyster Bay, and will continue through Exit 73 in Riverhead. At that point, signs will be replaced on service roads heading westbound. Eventually, the construction team will replace signs as far as the border between Nassau and Queens. The closures will take place Sunday-Thursday, and on Sunday nights, only eastbound lane closures will go into effect. The service road sections will only be closed one at a time, so that traffic disruptions can be minimized. A number of highway signs have already been replaced by safer, more visible markers on the LIE mainline, Northern and Southern State Parkways, Robert Moses Parkway, State Route 135, and Sunken Meadow Parkway.
