Gary Melius, a famous Long Island developer, was shot by a masked gunman in the head on Monday outside of his estate. Melius survived the attack, and managed to get back inside his house as the gunman fled. His daughter took him to Syosset Hospital. He was then transferred to North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System, where surgeons were able to save his life.
Oheka Castle, Melius’ residence, also serves as a wedding venue and posh hotel for affluent guests. According to Deputy Inspector Matthew C. Lewis of the Suffolk County Police, the shooting was almost certainly targeted and not random. Melius had just taken a seat in his vehicle when he was shot through the driver’s side window by the assailant. There is still no information on a motive, and to all indications, no robbery was involved. Melius is a political donor who has given money to Democrats as well as Republicans. He is also a philanthropist, and has raised millions for charitable causes. While Melius generally has a positive reputation, he doubtless has established enemies over the years. Police continue to search for leads in the case of his shooting, while friends and family give thanks that Melius is alive.
