Long Island based band Dream Theater is probably one of the best known local bands worldwide. Only days ago, guitarist John Petrucci was sitting down to enjoy a meal at Pace’s Steakhouse in Hauppauge when his guitar tech texted him with the news that Dream Theater has been nominated for a Grammy award for the song “The Enemy Within” on their latest self-titled album.
“It was funny,” Petrucci stated. “We were already out to dinner and had some wine, so we just raised a toast then and there.” Dream Theater consists of John Petrucci along with vocalist James LaBrie, drummer Mike Mangini, keyboardist Jordan Rudess, and bassist John Myung. This was the second album in a row for which the band received a Grammy nomination. The first was for their song “On the Backs of Angels” in 2012. While Dream Theater is well known among metal and progressive rock fans, the band looks upon the Grammy nominations as a sign that they are finally coming into mainstream recognition for their work. “It’s one thing to be known in your genre,” Petrucci said. “It’s another to be recognized by your peers spread out across many different styles. It’s a great feeling to be recognized like that.”
