The Long Island Association is pushing senators and state representatives to strengthen the local economy by supporting immigration reform initiatives. Together with the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, the LIA requested that it be made easier for highly skilled immigrants to gain entry to legally live and work in theUnited States. The initiative would support legal immigration in a number of ways. Firstly, it would provide green cards to entrepreneurs, and secondly, it would expand the cap on H-1B visas. Application processes would also be simplified and the process would take less time given the streamlining. Many different sectors of business on Long Island could feasibly benefit from the reform, including tourism, agriculture and technology.
Supporters of the change point toward computer programming job vacancies. Approximately 120,000 computer programming jobs are created every year in theUS, but only 40,000 college graduates receive a degree in computer science each year, which leaves numerous openings that remain unfilled by US workers. Immigrants who create new companies and jobs provide even more opportunity to American workers while bolstering the existing economy. LIA has been striving for years now to improve the economic conditions on Long Island with reforms that are suitable for the modern era.
