After the smoke cleared, and everyone was able to get a good look at the damage that Hurricane Sandy caused, people began to put up numbers for an esimate of how much it would cost to rebuild Long Island. Big, big numbers were put into different conversations to both rebuild many businesses and infrastructure items as well as help those Long Islanders who were in desperate need.
Some of the heavily damaged areas of Long Island was in the business sector. However, the medical centers, clinics and hospitals were again hit fairly hard. Officials at the Long Beach Medical Center in Nassau County, Long Island have released their estimate that it will cost $32 million for needed repairs and and replace equipment ruined in the flooding from the storm.
This is not good news as far as the medical center is concerned. Hospital chief executive Douglas Melzer says that in light of the damage and the needed repairs, the hospital won’t reopen until at least March. A 200-bed nursing home affiliated with the hospital is also closed, but is expected to reopen in about a week.
In the meantime, Long Beach Medical has had to lay off 700 of its 1,200 employees to cut costs. Again, this is not good news for the medical center or the community where these workers live. Hopefully the Long Beach Medical Center will be able to make these repairs and replace their equipment in time for an opening in March without any problems or set backs.
