Over 150 Long Beach residents packed a meeting room at the Magnolia Senior Center on Thursday, March 21 to hear landscaping and horticultural professionals offer advice on effective methods of cleaning up garden and lawn damage left in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.
The Farmingdale State College Horticulture Committee was invited by local community members interested in learning how to repair their damaged gardens, plants and trees. Margaret Fox-Jackson, Landscape Designer, Fox-Jackson Designs; Bonnie Klein, Horticulture Educator, Cornell Cooperative Extension Nassau County; Gregg Fowler, Landscaper and Sprinklers, Legacy Landscape; Tom Di Domenica Jr., Owner, The Dees' Nursery and George Urich, Landscaper, Top Notch Lawn Care answered questions from the standing room only crowd of garden enthusiasts. All agreed that over the next few months, raking, water and a lot of patience will be needed to get the garden back in order.
“Over the next few months, the most important thing to keep in mind is not to get carried away by cutting down tree limbs and shrubs,” said Klein. “They need time to bloom, and patience is key.”
