Southampton, NY - May 20, 2014 - Degas, Renoir, Matisse even Banksy masterpieces are enamored in every corner of the world. Local dance school, Studio 3, brings famous works of art to life on stage with “The Art of Dance.”
Premiering June 7th and 8th at the Southampton High School Theater, choreographers Diane and Meredith Shumway, Jenna Mazanowski, Liam Gifkins and Thomas Gallo have taken their inspiration from individual works of art and choreographed, costumed and developed music arrangements to bring the artwork alive on stage in the form of Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary and Lyrical.
The inspiration for the production came from teacher and choreographer, Meredith Shumways’ recent visit to the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville, TN.
“I went to see an art installation in Nashville that was interactive. When you walked by the installation, the artwork moved and changed. I was completely inspired by the movement of the body and how it related to the artwork. I wondered how we could create or interpret art with our bodies. My mother, Diane, and I began researching famous works of art, and the history of each painting and sculpture really sparked something inside us. I think the best part of developing each piece, was the learning process for the teachers as well as the students. We are going above and beyond this year because students aren’t just dancing to music on a stage, they are expressing the mood, feeling, color, pattern and history of each work of art and bringing it to life.”
Studio 3 is home to over 150 dancers from Southampton to Montauk who train during the school year in Classical Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Contemporary and Musical Theater. Each class and level has been given a painting or a sculpture and transformed it into dance. With three new up and coming choreographers, Jenna Mazanowski, Liam Gifkins and Thomas Gallo, Studio 3 combines the expertise of owner Diane Shumway and Assistant Director, Meredith Shumway with the fresh, new and current styles of their three newest choreographers/instructors to the team.
“The Art of Dance” premieres June 7th at 7pm and 8th at 2pm at Southampton High School Theater, 141 Narrow Lane, Southampton, NY 11968. Tickets are Reserved Seating and can be purchased by calling (631)537-3008 or e-mailing tickets@dancestudio3.com or visiting the website.
