The debilitating disease of Alzheimer's is not selective about who it will strike. Millions of people today suffer through this horrible condition as their families are helpless to do anything. Since 1983 the Long Island chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association has cared for thousands of families coping with the challenges of Alzheimer’s Disease.
However, the Long Island chapter of the organization is not happy with the way that they can do business and help those who are suffering. Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director and CEO of the former Long Island Chapter talked about this and said, “The National Alzheimer’s Association has compromised our ability to continue on with our mission as an affiliated Chapter of the national Association, and the time has come for us to separate from an organization that does not support our mission.”
While the Long Island chapter is separating itself from the national organization they are still going to operate as a lone non-profit. In a recent press release, the Alzheimer's Association stated:
"We will continue to operate independently as the “Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc.” — a separate tax-exempt charitable and educational organization within the State of New York, pursuant to Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended."They will continue to provide provide care, support and education programs for families in need, support ongoing research into this disease, and be advocates for families that are struggling with the disease in some capacity.
The decision to leave the National Alzheimer's Association was voted on by the Chapter’s Board of Directors. This was because the National Association failed to respect and protect the former Chapter’s exclusive territory. They also made recent significant, burdensome, and unnecessary demands which are related to restricted revenue fundraising, donor research gift restrictions, and employment decisions.
The local association also has big plans for broadening their support, the research, and their advocacy for those struggling with Alheimer's.
