Stony Brook, NY, August 7, 2013 – In a fitting tribute to its name, Long Island’s Harmony Vineyards is continuing to present “The Ray Anderson Classic Jazz Albums Live Concert Series,” where the internationally-renowned trombone virtuoso and an all-star band has been performing, in their entirety, some of the greatest albums in jazz history.
The next event in the summer-long free concert series will take place Sunday, August 25 at 2 pm, when Anderson and crew perform pianist Horace Silver’s classic Blue Note album, “The Cape Verdean Blues.” The all-star band will once again play the chosen classic jazz album in its entirety. This 1965 collection was inspired by the birthplace of Silver’s father, Cape Verde, and featured contributions by greats including trumpeter Woody Shaw, sax man Joe Henderson and trombonist J.J. Johnson, one of bandleader Ray Anderson’s greatest role models. Included are now standard tunes including “Nutville,” “Pretty Eyes,” “African Queen,” “Mo’ Joe” and the title track.
The three past Classic Jazz Album Live monthly concerts, performances of Miles Davis’ “Kind of Blue,” “Duke Ellington and John Coltrane” and Thelonious Monk’s “Underground,”were attended by a full crowd who enjoyed every sweet note and moment.
David Acker, founder of the event host, Harmony Vineyards, had this to say about the series: “Personally, I’ve been consistently and pleasantly surprised with the turnouts we’ve had. You really can't ask for a better setting and weather for some outdoor jazz than this.”
Due to the success of previous events, Harmony Vineyards is considering extending the free Classic Jazz Albums Live concert series into the fall and 2014.
Five times winner of the “Best Trombonist” in the Down Beat Magazine Critics Poll, Ray Anderson has shown remarkable range in his four decade professional career. Called the “most exciting slide brass player of his generation” by the Penguin Guide to Jazz, Anderson has led or co-led a wide variety of traditional-minded and experimental groups, ranging from big band and blues to bebop, funk and even a trombone quartet. His artistry is featured on more than 20 recordings as leader and dozens more as an accompanist, made in the company of other giants like Jimmy Giuffre, Anthony Braxton, David Murray, Dr. John, Henry Threadgill, John Scofield, Roscoe Mitchell, Sam Rivers and many more.
While not a part of the above concert series, Harmony Vineyards features a rotating roster of live jazz bands in its Tasting Room, and out of doors weather permitting, everySaturday from 1 – 8 pm and Sunday 1 – 6 pm.
