Today has been a tough day for commuters on Long Island. When a train went down in one of the tunnels of East River, 15 other trains were cancelled outright. Other trains were delayed for as long as an hour. The stranded train went down around 7:30 a.m. It was an hour before officials were able to tow the train to Jamaica. Because the train went down in the tunnel, LIRR was forced to work with only three tunnels, and not the usual four.
While the delays were inconvenient for businesspeople for several hours, by 11 a.m., most of the trains were back on schedule or close to it. Despite this, many commuters complained that they were faced with massive scheduling problems. Rides that normally would have taken an hour took as long as two. Some employees stated that they were concerned that they would be fired for their lateness. Many commuters were unable to make sense of the announcements they heard during the delays. One commuter told 1010 WINS, “The conductor was not very caring, we couldn’t understand any announcements that were going on.” Fortunately, the commute home should not be affected for many passengers now that service has returned to normal.
