LIRR and Metro-North Railroad have decided to install new monitoring equipment on their freight trains to help ensure safety on their public tracks. The new Train Fault Detector Systems will be able to sense when the wheels on the freight trains are overloaded or overheating. In case of defective wheels, the systems will automatically transmit warnings to the control centers for the railroads.
“This specialized equipment will improve safety and reduce wear and tear on our tracks,” stated Thomas Prendergast, Chariman and CEO of the MTA. By doing so, the system will be able to prevent problems before they can cause dangers and delays on the railroads. The installation of the equipment could prevent derailments like the one that happened last year in Metro North. The only hitch is the complexity of the system—and the fact that it has not even been designed yet. To that end, the railroads intend to submit a Request for Proposal to the MTA, which would allow them to search for a contractor that can take on the tasks of design and installation. The system would be installed on the main line west of Bellerose Station, and would be fully integrated with the CSX fault detection systems which will also be implemented.
