Wondering how you’re going to get to and from your New Year’s Eve celebrations and activities? The MTA has just announced a number of changes for LIRR service this New Year’s Eve. Many Long Islanders travel downtown to New York City to enjoy the festivities. As such, LIRR will be operating dozens of additional trains to accommodate New Year’s Eve travel needs. There will be eleven additional eastbound trains from Penn Station in the early afternoon, as well as 20 late afternoon and early evening trains running westbound into Penn and Atlantic Terminal. 18 more trains will be added heading eastbound out of Atlantic Terminal and Penn Station in the early morning. Billy Joel is hosting a New Year’s Eve Concert at Barclays Center, so LIRR will also be running four extra trains to help fans get home after the show is over.
As one final note, LIRR has announced that alcoholic beverages will be banned on their trains beginning on 12 PM noon today and running through 12 pm tomorrow. MTA officials hope that this ban will help keep train rides safe and pleasant for riders of all ages. This should make for a more enjoyable New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day commute for everybody.
