Beginning today, five rush-hour trains on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) will be cancelled for the coming four weeks. The reason is that summer crews working on the East Side Access Project in Sunnyside, Queens, require access to the tracks in order to lay down concrete slabs for a new underpass. While this currently has the effect of disrupting commuter traffic, it will ultimately relieve congestion. In the meantime, LIRR will be accommodating travelers who would typically ride these trains by adding in stops to other trains. Four other trains will run abbreviated routes. For many passengers, the delays should not exceed 5-15 minutes.
The concrete slabs will also allow LIRR to resume its normal schedule sooner rather than later. According to the MTA, “Without the slab, weekend LIRR outages would have been required for many months” in order to complete the project. The Babylon, Montauk, Oyster Bay, Port Jefferson, Port Washington and Ronkonkoma lines will all be impacted by the cancellations. Several morning routes will be affected as well as several evening routes. If you ride any of these lines, check with the LIRR or MTA to see if your schedule will be affected, and what you should do regarding alternate routes.
