How many times have you pulled up in front of a train track, noticed a train on its way, and thought to yourself, “I can make it if I hurry?” It can be tempting to speed over the tracks to avoid waiting at the gate, but often drivers underestimate the speed of the oncoming train, and the result is devastation, injury, and even death.
To try and persuade commuters on Long Island to play it safe, the Long Island Rail Road has posted ads in a new campaign online to try and educate drivers about the dangers of racing a train. The first of two videos features a computer generated simulation of a wreck, but the wreckage shown at the end is from a real collision that killed a woman and her father on January 22nd in Brentwood. “At 60 miles per hour, it takes up to a mile for a train to come to a halt,” states the video. “It only takes a fraction of a second to make a very bad decision,” states the other video. “Your life is worth the wait.” There are more than 295 grade crossings along the LIRR track, most of them located in Nassau and Suffolk. So far this year, there have already been six deaths resulting from nine crashes.
