LIPA is closely monitoring Hurricane Sandy, which is expected to move up the East Coast this weekend. The National Hurricane Center forecasts it will reach our area late Sunday and storm conditions may last for several days.
This storm could be particularly severe because it is expected to combine with other weather activity in our area to create nor'easter conditions.
Tropical storm force winds, heavy rain, and coastal flooding are likely. This type of weather can uproot trees, bringing down electric poles and wires, and cause flooding. There is significant potential for damage that could cause large numbers of power outages. Please be prepared for the possibility of multi-day outages due to potential severe weather conditions.
LIPA preparations have been underway for several days and all of our employees will be available to respond to our customers' needs. We are also securing additional workers from both on and off Long Island.
Please note, so that all employees can support storm restoration our walk-in customer offices will be closed on Monday and Tuesday October 29th & 30th or perhaps longer. Check our Web site or call 1-800-490-0075.
We also want you and your family to be prepared:
If you lose power, please report it to LIPA anytime using any of the following methods:
Make sure we have your current phone number in our records. You can easily update that now on our Web site at www.lipower.org/account, or by using our automated telephone services at 1-800-490-0025.
We encourage you to visit our Storm Center Web site for more information about storm preparedness and updates on the storm. Monitor local news for weather updates. We will continue to keep our customers updated via phone calls, e-mail, online at www.lipower.org/stormcenter,Facebook, and Twitter, and on the radio.
